The spoon like curving of the nails are known as spoon nails, in babies who have very thin nails this is very common.

My child had spoon bent nails since birth, but didn’t seem to be in any pain. I have once sought advice from a medical professional, and was told that this is common in babies with thin nails. However, if the baby seems to be under some sort of pain, we were told that we should visit the hospital again.

Currently my baby is 2 and a half years old, and hasn’t felt any pain from the nails. With growth, the child begins to exercise and finds that the nail starts to become a normal shape. However, if the nails remain spoon shaped, the cause might be something else entirely different.

For example, iron deficiency, when there isn’t enough iron stored in the body. Under such conditions one might be under risk of anaemia. Therefore, even after growing for a while, if the nails don’t return to normal, we recommend seeing a medical professional.

P.S.

Since writing this article is has been longer than 5 year, my children are now 7 years old. They still have slightly bent nails but have never expressed any pain because of it.
With growth, the nails become thicker and more durable.

However, this is concerning my children and is not addressing the average child. Even after entering elementary school, if the child is expressing pain in the nails they should definitley be examined by a medical professional.
