A healthy nail has a pink colour with a smooth surface.

However, anaemia causes the nails to lose it’s red tint and may appear blue/white. If the nail appears to look different to usual, the chances of being ill or the body being tired are very high.

Furthermore, chronic liver disease may also cause the nail to become white.

Appling small pressure to the nail changes the colour to white, if it returns to pink immediately it shows that the blood supply is redistributed to the pressured region. This shows the heart is functioning normally.

As the condition of the nail acts as a barometer for your health, it’s better not to apply any nail art before visiting a hospital.

The durability is not the same across the nail. The area closest to the floorplate is the hardest, with the distal region being the most brittle. Regions that have grown away from the root will not heal after damage, yet as long as the nail matrix remains intact the nail will keep growing.

Nutrition that are good for the nail

The nail is a form of skin made the protein keratin. Therefore, to keep the nail healthy a healthy diet rich in protein is thought to be effective.

Other than protein, vitamin A, B and D are required.
