Abnormalities of nails are abnormalities of the body

The nails are excellent at relaying any problems in the body. “The nail is the barometer of your health” this statement expresses how the nail undergoes specific changes to certain internal abnormalities occurring in the body. The question is how serious these changes in the nail are taken

For example, if the nail appears black

A healthy nail has a pink colour with a smooth surface, however if the nail appears black there are a couple of possible causes as listed below.

1. overproduction of hormones which create pigments.
2. Addison’s disease and diseases of the adrenal cortex.
3. Chronic porphyria disease, increased levels of iron in blood.

The blackening of the nails can evolve into a large range of diseases. The main problem however, is when this symptom doesn’t alert the patient to go to the hospital. Many people wouldn’t take the trip for just a small colour change in the nail.

Running places a burden on the toenails which may cause internal bleeding. Depending on the severity of the bleeding the wound may heal by itself without any professional medical attention.

However, what if the colour change was caused by an internal disease of the body? Without professional medical attention, the disease may progress to a stage that is already too late to treat.

Whilst the body is healthy, changes don’t occur in the nails

As long as the body is healthy, the nails would not undergo any abnormal changes. Therefore, even the smallest changes or discomfort should be taken as a sign that there are problems occurring in the body.

Whilst keeping an eye on the nails, if the symptoms do not appear to get any better, please visit a medical specialist.
